history

In February 1959, the private railway company Tōkyō Kyūkō Dentetsu (Tōkyū), which operates in the Tokyo area , received approval from the Ministry of Transport to build an extension of the Itō line, which had been opened two decades earlier . Three months later, on April 11, 1959, Tōkyū founded the subsidiary Itō Shimoda Denki Tetsudō ( 伊 東 下田 電 気 鉄 道 ), which began building the line in February 1960. On February 20, 1961, it was renamed Izu Kyūkō and on December 10, 1961, it opened the Izu-Kyūkō line along its entire length. From November 1, 1972, the shares of Izu Kyūkō were listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange . The Tokyu Group took the company off the stock exchange on October 1, 2004 through a share swap . As part of a restructuring, on March 1, 2012, all company divisions except the railway line, the aerial cableway and the taxi operation were spun off to Izukyū Holdings.
