The Shimoda cable car ( Japanese 下田 ロ ー プ ウ ェ イ , Shimoda Rōpuwēi ; English Shimoda Ropeway ) is a cable car in Japan . It is located in Shimoda City in Shizuoka Prefecture , on the east coast of the Izu Peninsula . It is operated by the Izu Kyūkō company , which belongs to the Tokyu Group .
The cable car was opened on April 1, 1961, eight months before the Izu-Kyūkō line leading to Shimoda . The Shin-Shimoda ( 新 下田 ) valley station is about a hundred meters away from the Izukyū-Shimoda train station . From there it leads across the Inōzawa River to the Nesugatayama ( 寝 姿 山 ) mountain station on the observation mountain of the same name. The cable car overcomes a height difference of 156 m over a length of 540 m.
The system is an aerial tramway with a suspension cable and a pull cable in both directions. The two cabins offer space for 39 people each and move at a speed of 3.6 m / s. The train is usually in operation between 8:45 a.m. and 4:45 p.m., every 15 minutes. The journey time is three and a half minutes. The Nesugatayama offers a panoramic view of the port of Shimoda, Sagami Bay and the Pacific Ocean .
