The Pandaceae are a family in the order of the Malpighiales (Malpighiales) within the flowering plants (Magnoliopsida). In a disjoint area , the 15 to 28 species occur in tropical West Africa or Southeast Asia to New Guinea and the Solomon Islands .

description

Stone core of Panda oleosa

All species are evergreen , woody plants: trees or shrubs . The branches are plagiotropic (plagiotropic: direction of growth determined by geotropism , which does not have the orientation of the stem axis ). The alternate, two-line, densely arranged in short shoots (looks like a pinnate leaf) are simple leaves . The leaf margins are smooth, serrated or toothed. There are stipules present.

They are usually dioeciously separated sexes ( diocesan ). The flowers stand together individually or in differently structured inflorescences . The small, radially symmetrical flowers are unisexual and usually five-fold. There are five sepals and five petals each. The male flowers contain one, two or three circles with five free, fertile stamens each . In the female flowers are two to five carpels to syncarp, Upper permanent ovary overgrown, with two to five free pencils. There are drupes formed.

Systematics and distribution

The family has a disjoint area : home areas of the taxa are in West Africa or Southeast Asia to New Guinea and the Solomon Islands .

In the Pandaceae family there are only three genera with 15 to 28 species. The three genera previously belonged to the tribe Galearieae in the subfamily Acalyphoideae within the family of Euphorbiaceae :

  • Galearia customs. & Moritzi (including Bennettia R.Br. and Cremostachys Tul. ): The approximately five species occur from Indochina to the Solomon Islands .
  • Microdesmis Hook.f. ex Hook. (Including Tetragyne Miq. ): The eleven or so species are distributed in tropical West Africa and Southeast Asia.
  • Panda Pierre (Syn .: Porphyranthus Engl. ): It contains only one species:
    • Panda oleosa Pierre : It occurs in tropical west-central Africa as well as in West Africa.
