Potsdam Association for the German Language

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Potsdam Association for the German Language was founded on June 3, 1848 by Friedrich Karl Keil in Potsdam . The association existed at least until 1859.

Club founder

Friedrich Karl (Carl) Keil (1775–1853) was a gymnastics teacher at the Great Military Orphanage in Potsdam from 1830 and in 1832 switched to the same position at the Royal Cadet House in Potsdam. He wrote patriotic writings and books on military sports, the latter being in the tradition of the work of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn . At the time the association was founded, Keil held the rank of inspector .

Club work

The Potsdam Association for the German Language was a rather small association. In the fifth year of its existence, when Potsdam had around 40,000 inhabitants, it had only 29 members. The most important activity of the association was the monthly publication of articles in Potsdam and Berlin newspapers at the association's expense. These contributions, mostly written by the club's founder, offered substitute formations for foreign words and also contained admonitions to cleanse the language.
