Povarovo is an anonymous Russian dark jazz band.

history

The Povarovo group gives little information about their history. Moscow is named as the place of origin . The date of foundation is not known. The musicians appear under pseudonyms. The group recorded an album with Tchernovik , which was self-published in 2007, self-titled on the Russian label Aquarellist in 2010 and again in 2012 as Tchernovik on Denovali Records . The album was particularly well received and highly praised by reviewers after it was released on Denovali Records.

style

Povarovo's music is mostly attributed to dark jazz. The music is referred to as a mixture of " jazz , ambient , doom , neoclassical and the love of sound experimentation", as well as a "reinterpretation of doom". In reviews, Bohren & the Club of Gore , the Dale Cooper Quartet & the Dictaphones and The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble are named as comparables.

Label and band confirm influences from Bohren & the Club of Gore and the Kilimanjaro Dark Jazz Ensemble. The group would mix ideas from these groups with neoclassical elements and the melancholy of traditional Russian music. Povarovo stands out from other representatives of dark jazz through the "use of electronic background noise". So “sluggish electronic rhythms act as the foundation for jazzy passages that are performed by the clarinet […], guitar and piano. The overall picture is completed by electronic effects outside of the pure rhythm. "

Other non-electronic ideas for background support are also described as innovations in the genre. This would apply particularly if the group “generates its background support not with electronic help, but on the basis of minimalist aids, such as their own body or instruments. This is expressed in the form of a bow that is struck over the strings of a guitar, up to the loud, rhythmic breath like in the song '66 Breath '. ”In addition, there are musical elements and instruments that are unusual for the style, such as Andalusian percussions, or Elements of classical music are used.

These complement features that are more typical of the style. “Lonely piano sounds, a broom hesitantly stroking the drums, cello tones that are struck, first pause and then fade away; a melancholy trumpeter who disappears into nothing between breathed fanfares and occasionally reappears on the saxophone and clarinet. "
