Powerset was a semantic search engine . She tried to interpret human language in a meaningful way and to find suitable answers. The machine was only designed for the English language and used the English language Wikipedia and the content of the Freebase database as a knowledge base .

Powerset was operated by the startup Powerset based in San Francisco . She received significant support from Xerox PARC . After about a year of testing, Powerset officially launched its search service on May 12, 2008.

In early July 2008, Powerset was acquired by Microsoft for an undisclosed price . The Powerset website now redirects to the Microsoft search engine Bing .
