The Kyōto Prefectural Medical University ( Japanese 京都 府 立 医科大学 , Kyōto-furitsu ika daigaku ; Eng. Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine , short: Furitsu Idai ( 府 立 医 大 )) is a public university in Japan . It is located in the Kamigyō-ku district of the city of Kyoto .

history

The university has its origins in the Ryōbyōin Prefectural Hospital ( 療 病院 ), founded in 1872, where Japanese and European doctors trained young Japanese in addition to their medical practice. The first European doctor was Ferdinand Adalbert Junker von Langegg (see O-yatoi gaikokujin ). He was followed by Constant George van Mansvelt (1832–1912) and Heinrich Botho Scheube . The hospital and medical school were first located in the Buddhist temple Shōren-in ( 青蓮 院 ), in July 1880 they moved to today's campus.

In 1882 the training center was recognized by the Ministry of Education as a technical college for medicine and subsequently various departments were added. In 1903 it was converted to the Kyoto Prefectural Medical School, and in 1921 it rose to the new higher education law according to the Kyoto Prefectural Medical University. The university was not amalgamated to form the Kyōto State University like other prefectural medical universities (e.g. Osaka and Nagoya ), because it ensured freedom from direct administration by the Japanese Ministry of Education (today: MEXT ).

Since 2008, the Medical University and the Prefectural University of Kyoto have been supported by a prefectural university body.
