location
The building is located in Helsinki city center at Pohjoisesplanadi 1, immediately north of the Eteläsatama basin belonging to the port of Helsinki . Immediately to the west is the building of the Supreme Court of Finland .
Architecture and history
The palace was built between 1816 and 1820 by the architect Pehr Granstedt for the wealthy entrepreneur Johan Henrik Heidenstrauch . In 1837, the acquired Russian Czar Nicholas I the building. He had the architect Carl Ludwig Engel undertake extensive renovations, which were completed in 1845. The building, designed in the neoclassical style , was then used as a residence by Tsar Alexander II . Balls were held. After the death of Alexander II in 1881, the building lost its importance. From 1904 to 1907 the palace was renovated, the rooms were redesigned by the architect Johan Jakob Ahrenberg and the sculpture Psyche and Zephyr created by Walter Runeberg was installed in the house. In 1915 the Tsar visited the palace one last time.
During the First World War a hospital was housed in the house . After the Finnish declaration of independence in 1917, the palace first became the seat of the Finnish Senate, and then of the Finnish President in 1919.
Today the palace is used for state receptions, representative occasions and especially for the celebrations for the Finnish Independence Day on December 6th. There is a daily changing of the guard at the eastern main guard. The President himself has had his residence since 1993 on the Mäntyniemi peninsula, just outside the center of Helsinki .
