Presidential election in Burundi 2010

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The presidential elections in Burundi 2010 took place on June 28, 2010 in Central African Burundi and ended with a 90% victory for ruling President Pierre Nkurunziza . Since Nkurunziza had no opponent because of the boycott of the election by all opposition parties, the election must be classified as a sham election , which gave the winner no legitimacy to continue his presidency.

Causes of the opposition boycott

The local elections in May of the same year , which began with high hopes for a democratic outcome, were viewed by all opposition parties as falsified. When their request for re-election was not granted, the opposition parties saw no chance of a fair and correct conduct of the presidential elections. Against this background and in view of the massive intimidation of voters, the five opposition candidates, including Agathon Rwasa, the most promising opposing candidate Nkurunziza, withdrew their candidacy in the presidential elections on June 1, 2010 .

Official results

In the absence of an opposing candidate, the results of the elections are largely meaningless. The voter turnout would be particularly meaningful. The chairman of an international observer mission, however, assessed these official figures as far too high.

Attacks and escape of opposition members

On the day before the elections, there were attacks in the capital Bujumbura and in the north of the country, which the government blamed on the opposition. The opposition denied any involvement in these attacks. After the elections and house searches of opposition activists, Nkurunziza's opponent Rwasa probably fled to the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo to forestall an arrest.
