Presidential election in Israel 1978
The 1978 presidential election in Israel was held on April 19, 1978 in the Knesset . Ephraim Katzir , who was elected president in 1973 , had refused a second term because his wife was ill. The only candidate for the office of president was Yitzhak Navon .

Navon's term began on the day of his election. Navon remained president until 1983, he was replaced by Chaim Herzog .
