Ephraim Katzir ( Hebrew אפרים קציר; actually Ephraim Katchalski; * May 16, 1916 in Kiev , Russian Empire ; † May 30, 2009 in Rechowot ) was an Israeli scientist ( biophysicist ) and politician of the Mapai ("Israeli Labor Party"). From May 24, 1973 to April 19, 1978, Katzir was the fourth President of Israel .

Katzir was from 1951 to 1973 head of the biophysical department of the Weizmann Institute in Rechowot and from 1966 to 1968 chief scientific advisor to the Israeli army . In 1959 he was awarded the Israel Prize . In 1960 he received the Rothschild Prize in Life Sciences and in 1972 the Sir Hans Krebs Medal of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies . In 1985 he was awarded the Japan Prize for his achievements in the field of biotechnology . He was a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina , since 1966 a foreign member of both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences , since 1976 a member of the American Philosophical Society , since 1977 an external member of the Royal Society and from 1989 also a foreign member Member of the Académie des Sciences .

After a term of office, he returned to science in 1978. He founded and established the Biotechnology Department at Tel Aviv University . Katzir worked in the field of peptide chemistry , especially polypeptides . He worked with Michael Sela on this.

He was the brother of Aharon Katzir .
