Katchalsky came to Palestine , what is now Israel , in 1925 . There he adopted the Hebrew surname Katzir. In 1948 he became head of the polymer research department at the Weizmann Institute and in 1952 professor of physical chemistry at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

He dealt with the electrochemistry of biopolymers and thermodynamics of biological networks.

In 1961 he received the Israel Prize . 1962 to 1968 he was President of the Israel Academy of Sciences. In 1964 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , and in 1971 to the National Academy of Sciences .

He was the brother of Ephraim Katzir .
