Grete Grander (born June 25, 1942 in St. Johann in Tirol ) is a former Austrian ski racer . She achieved several victories and podiums in international races in the late 1950s and early 1960s, before she had to end her career in 1962 after a serious injury.

Career

Grander started skiing at the age of three. Her neighbor Hias Noichl , a successful cross-country skier , discovered her talent and brought her to the St. Johann ski club, where she was able to train regularly. After victories at the club championships and school championships at district and state level, Grander was four times Austrian youth champion in 1958 and 1959. After being accepted into the squad of the Austrian Ski Association , Grander achieved her first successes on an international level at the end of the 1950s, above all with victory in downhill skiing in Crans-Montana in 1959. After she had to pause for a long time in the 1959/1960 season due to injury , Grander reached several podium places again in the winter of 1960/1961: She was second in the giant slalom of Crans-Montana and third in each case in the slalom of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains and in the descent from Chamonix . At the Austrian Championships in 1961 , she also achieved a podium finish as second in the slalom.

In the next season, 1961/1962, Grander achieved good results, especially in the downhill. With a victory in Val Gardena as well as two third places in Lenzerheide and at the SDS races in Grindelwald , she reached first place in the FIS downhill ranking list in 1962. Nevertheless, she could not compete in the 1962 World Championships in Chamonix, because her starting place was temporarily assigned to Marianne Jahn was awarded to enable them to participate in the combination after their victories in slalom and giant slalom. Grander was only used as a forerunner in the World Cup downhill and, according to unofficial measurements, set the fastest time of the day. Four weeks after the World Championship, Grander sustained serious injuries at the Arlberg-Kandahar race in Sestriere . She suffered a fractured skull base and cerebral haemorrhage and was in critical condition for several weeks. Her health recovered completely, but had to end her career on the advice of the doctors. Grander completed his training as a nurse and had a daughter in 1970.
