Presidential elections in Comoros 2010

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2010 Comoros presidential elections took place on November 7th, with a second round on December 26th. On all three main islands of the Comoros the gubernatorial elections for the islands were held on the same day. There had been an attempt to let it take place on November 27, 2011 and to extend the term of office of incumbent President Ahmed Abdallah Sambi until then, but the Constitutional Court ruled that in May 2010 it was unconstitutional. The previous Vice President - who was in office until 2016 - Ikililou Dhoinine emerged from the elections as the winner.

Electoral process

In the Comoros, the presidency rotates every four years between the three islands that make up the federal state of the Comoros: Anjouan , Mohéli and Grande Comore . During this period it was up to Mohéli to appoint the president. The ruling president, Ahmed Abdallah Sambi , was from Anjouan and could no longer stand as a candidate.

The president is elected in two rounds: in the first round, the voters of Mohéli voted in primaries on the candidates and the three candidates with the most votes go to the second round, in which the voters of all the islands then elect the president who will be the Victory needs a majority of all votes.

Candidates

10 candidates went into the first round. President Sambi supported incumbent Vice-President Ikililou Dhoinine . Another candidate from the president's movement was Mohamed Larifou Oukacha , its general secretary, which revealed a possible rift in the president's faction. Other candidates were Mohamed Said Fazul , the former governor of Mohéli, and Zahariat Said Ahmed , the only female candidate.

Results

First round

Ikililou Dhoinine, Mohamed Said Fazul and Bianrifi Tarmidhi received the most votes in the primaries. However, Tarmidhi's total number of votes was removed from the count by the Constitutional Court on November 13 after invalidating the contents of the ballot boxes at several polling stations. As a result, Abdou Djabir got into the second round alongside Dhoinine and Fazul .
