The presidential elections in Comoros 2016 took place on February 21, 2016 and April 10, 2016. On April 10, the gubernatorial elections took place simultaneously on all three main islands of the Comoros ( Mohéli , Gande Comore and Anjouan ). Azali Assoumani of the Convention for the Renewal of the Comoros was elected president with 41% . He was president of the state from 1999 to 2006.

Electoral process

In the Comoros , a new president is usually elected every four years. The three islands (Mohéli, Grande Comore and Anjouan), which together form the state of the Comoros, alternate. After Anjouan had put a candidate in 2006 and Mohéli Island in 2010, the 2016 presidential elections were limited to candidates from Grande Comore Island. The then ruling President Ikililou Dhoinine comes from the Comoros island of Mohéli and was therefore unable to run again.

The Comoros presidential election consists of two rounds of voting. First, the residents of the island, which will be the president, vote on their candidates. The best three are then shortlisted and in the second ballot all citizens of the islands can finally vote on the president.

Candidates

A total of 25 candidates from the island of Grande Comore ran for the first ballot. Mohamed Ali Soilihi , Mouigni Baraka and Azali Assoumani received the most votes and thus ran for the second ballot.
