Azali Assoumani (born January 1, 1959 in Mitsoudjé , Comoros) was President of the Comoros from 1999 to 2006 . He has held the office again since 2016.

Life

Assoumani became President of the country on April 30, 1999 after he had overthrown the previous President Tadjidine Ben Said Massounde as Colonel of the Comorian Army , as he appeared to support Anjouan's striving for independence . Assoumani held the office of president until January 21, 2002, but then won the multi-party elections on May 26, 2002. In May 2006 he was defeated by the Islamist Ahmed Abdallah Mohamed Sambi in the presidential election . He won the presidential election on April 15, 2016, and took office on May 26 of the same year.

Assoumani is married and has four children.

Until 2018, the presidency rotated every five years between the country's three islands, Grande Comore, Anjouan and Mohéli. The 2018 constitutional referendum ended that system and allowed Azali to participate in the Comorian presidential election of 2019, which he won in the first round with 60.7% of the votes cast.
