Presidential elections in the Seychelles 2011

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2011 presidential elections in Seychelles took place from May 19-21, 2011 and ended with a 55% victory for James Alix Michel , the incumbent President of the Seychelles . 54,847 registered voters were called upon to elect a president. Since Michel received more than 50% of the vote, an otherwise necessary second ballot became superfluous.

Democratic standards

The elections were accompanied by a Commonwealth Observer Commission , which certified progress on the Seychelles' path to electoral democracy, but also criticized deficits in the democratic process. In particular, the establishment of a genuinely independent electoral commission was considered necessary and a genuine independence of the Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation ( Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation ) was called for.

On May 22nd, all the losing candidates announced that they would not attend the official results announcement because they questioned the official results. The defeated candidates spoke of electoral fraud and particularly criticized the fact that, to their knowledge, money had been used to influence voters.

The Observer Commission stated that it was unable to confirm or refute the allegations made.

Candidates

  • James Alix Michel , President of the Seychelles since 2004, before that Vice-President. Member of the socialist-oriented People's Party , which was the only approved party in the country from 1979 to 1991 under the name of the Unity Party of the Seychellois People .
  • Wavel Ramkalawan , former priest and since 1990 leading figure of the opposition in the fight against the one-party state that existed until 1991 and after the introduction of the multi-party system . Member of the liberal Seychelles National Party , which considers the achieved degree of democratization to be incomplete and dubious. Ramkalawan won 45% of the vote in the 2006 elections against Michel.
  • Philippe Boullé , who started as an independent, had already participated unsuccessfully in the presidential elections in 1993, 2001 and 2006 and received less than 1% of the vote in each case.
  • Ralph Volcere, the only "new" candidate, ran for the New Democratic Party .

The application of a fifth candidate, Viral Dhanjee, was rejected by the electoral commission because he could not produce the required valid supporter signatures from at least 500 eligible voters.
