Praetextatus of Rouen
Praetextatus († February 25, 586 in Rouen ) was Bishop of Rouen in the years 550 to 577 and a second time from 584 to 586. He took part in the synods in Paris 561/562 and the Council of Tours (567) .
Brunichild , widow of the Frankish king Sigibert I , was imprisoned in Rouen after his death in 575. Shortly thereafter, Praetextatus married her there, contrary to current church law, with Merowech , the son of her arch enemy Chilperich . This then had Praetextatus brought to court in 577 and charged with conspiracy and embezzlement. Despite the defense by Gregory of Tours , Praetextatus was removed from office and Melantius was appointed bishop instead. After the death of Chilperich, Praetextatus was again bishop of Rouen according to the will of the people. Two years later, however, he was murdered either by his predecessor and successor Melantius or by Fredegunde , Chilperich's widow (Gregory of Tours, Historien VIII 31).
In the Roman Catholic Church , Praetextatus is venerated as a saint (Remembrance day: February 24).
