Praga Synagogue

The Praga Synagogue ( Synagoga Praska in Polish ) was the synagogue of the Warsaw suburb of Praga and the only synagogue in Warsaw that was built as a rotunda.

history

Initially there was only one Jewish suburban community in Warsaw, which existed in the Warsaw suburb of Praga , which was named after Prague . Only privileged members of Warsaw's Praga community were allowed to live in the city of Warsaw. In 1836 the Praga Synagogue or suburban synagogue was built according to plans by Józef Grzegorz Lessel , which replaced the Old Praga Synagogue from 1819. The synagogue was one of only six round synagogues in Europe at that time. It was located on the corner of the then Ulica Petersburska and Ulica Szeroka or today's Ulica Jagiellońska and Ulica Wójcika and was designed in the classical style. In addition to the rotunda , it had four symmetrical atria.

During the occupation of Warsaw , the synagogue was used by the German occupiers as a delousing point. It was damaged in the course of the Second World War , but was preserved. It was not until 1961 that the city administration ordered the demolition of the synagogue due to its ruinous condition - despite an entry in the monument protection register. In 2009, plans were announced to rebuild the building.
