Józef Grzegorz Karol Lessel (born October 6, 1802 in Warsaw ; † 1844 ibid) was a Polish architect who worked primarily in Warsaw and also worked in the city building department.

Life

Lessel was the son of German-born Friedrich Albert Lessel , who also worked as an architect in Warsaw. He received his first training from his father. In 1823 he became an applicant for the Warsaw city architect Adolf Schuch . As a result, he studied abroad, partly financed by the Warsaw City Council. From 1825 to 1826 he was in Paris at the Academy of Fine Arts there . Stays in Italy and England followed. In 1829 he returned to Warsaw. In 1830 he received the title of builder 3rd class (valid throughout the Kingdom of Poland ). On June 29, 1829, he was appointed deputy to the second Warsaw master builder. On March 11, 1830, he became the second master builder with a salary of 5,000 złoty. In his role as urban architect, he worked with Alfons Ferdynand Kropiwnicki from 1835 . Lessel was an honorary member of the Building Inspectorate of the Catholic Churches in Warsaw.

Lessel's best-known project was the so-called suburban synagogue in Warsaw's Praga district , one of only six round synagogues in Europe at the time. He also designed the mikveh in Ulica Kłopotowskiego 31 . In addition, the construction plans of Karol Minter's metallurgical factory with an adjacent palace for the entrepreneur go back to him. Other larger buildings that arose under his leadership were the no longer existing parish of the parish of St. Alexander on the corner of Plac Trzech Krzyży and Ulica Książęca as well as several fire stations with observation towers and various tenement houses.

The architect was married twice, first (1834) to Emma Johanna Katarzyna Brandt, then (1841) to Wanda-Helena Helbich. He had two children and was buried in the Powązki cemetery .
