history

The pillory tavern is a late medieval and listed building in the Neusiedlerseeort Breitenbrunn in Burgenland, which was first mentioned in the documents in 1257.

A year 1789 carved in stone above the arch of the pillory tavern indicates a further expansion in the baroque period. However, the existing cellar vaults are of much older origin and testify to their historical use as a social meeting place for food and drink.

It is believed that Jaroslav Hasek's “Good Soldier Schweik” tavern riot also took place in these venerable walls, in which the Czech soldiers had their Hungarian comrades hang upside down from the windows. The front part of the house was also used as a community inn and is connected to another impressive cellar via an underground passage. In 1921, Hungarian irregulars were housed here, who were supposed to prevent the connection to Austria by force of arms. A warning of approaching attackers was issued via the defense tower in the immediate vicinity.

During the Second World War, prisoners of war were accommodated in the upper hall, who were forced to work in the surrounding agriculture. Towards the end of the war, the pillory tavern served as a food store for the German Wehrmacht, until it was occupied by six Russian military police and a commander of the Soviet army as a commandant's office in April 1945 to 1955.

In the early 1970s, the property was bought by an association and later became the property of the Gitzi family. Since then, the pillory tavern has served as a public culture and event center with artistic performances and vernissages by well-known artists who appreciate the extraordinary ambience in the historically preserved halls and cellar vaults.
