The Prax ice cave is a cave in the Loferer Steinberge in Salzburg . The cave is located in the eastern part of the mountain range under the ridge that runs north from the Großer Ochsenhorn . It is about a kilometer long. As a through cave, it has two entrances. The main entrance ( 47 ° 33 ′ 6.2 ″  N , 12 ° 40 ′ 7.6 ″  E ) is located above Maria Kirchenthal at an altitude of 1650 m and is reached via the Schärdingersteig . The second entrance ( 47 ° 33 ′ 13 ″  N , 12 ° 39 ′ 58.4 ″  E ) is inaccessible on the other side of the mountain in the black wall . You can marvel at bizarre ice sculptures in the cave almost all year round. Therefore, the average temperature in the cave is barely above 0 ° C. The cave was explored in 1925 by Czoernig, Rullmann and Sporer. The cave is locked and can only be visited with a cave guide after prior registration.
