The Großer Ochsenhorn is with a height of 2511 m above sea level. A. the highest point of the Loferer Steinberge . It rises in the eastern part of the Steinberge from the small defensive pit, the snow pit and the Fellerer sand. To the east it sends the Ochsenhornkamm, which descends over the medium and small Ochsenhorn to the Vorderhorn. To the northwest it sends the ridge of the Sattelhorn, which separates the snow pit from the small weir pit. To the west, the Ochsenhorn is separated from the western part of the Steinberge by the Rotschartel. To the north, the large Ochsenhorn sends a rugged rock face into the snow pit, to the south, on the other hand, it slopes down to the Fellerer Sand with steep pillars and wall breaks. Some demanding climbing routes lead over these pillars.

The marked normal route begins at the saddle of the Sattelhorn, requires easy climbing (I UIAA scale) and takes about an hour from the Sattelhorn. There are three possible approaches:
- over the Loferer high valley and the Schmidt-Zabierow hut , marked, 4 hours
- from St. Martin bei Lofer via the Schärdinger Steig , marked, 3.5 hours, easy climbing I.
- from St. Ulrich am Pillersee via the Grieseltal and Rotschartel , not marked, 4.5 hours
