Origin of name
The name Praz has its roots in the Latin pratum (= meadow). In a document from 1375 there are two spellings: "villagium dov Pra" and "de Prato"; it is unclear whether both mean the same place. In 1390 there is the spelling "Prato in Willie" and from 1509 "Praz". The German name "Matten" is first recorded for 1523.
history
The first documentary mention comes from the year 1375, in which Praz is mentioned as a fiefdom of Murten and is assigned to the municipality of La Rivière together with other places. Until 1484 Praz belonged to the rule of Murten, which then became a common rule of Bern and Freiburg, and from 1798 to the district of Murten. In 1758 a fire destroyed the village.
building
In the village center there are some winegrowers' houses and stately patrician residences belonging to the von Erlach -Velga and von Wattenwyl families .
