Prize for cityscape maintenance of the city of Munich

The Cityscape Maintenance Prize is an award given by the City of Munich , initially every three years, and since 2016 every four years, for construction work on or in connection with monuments and listed ensembles in Munich. The winners will be determined as part of a competition for building and renovating in a historical setting .

The aim of the competition and the awarding of the prize is to recognize and promote exemplary examples of contemporary architecture within listed ensembles and in connection with architectural monuments .

history

By a resolution of the Munich City Council on November 26, 1986, the competition "Monument Protection and New Building", through which the winners of the Prize for Cityscape Maintenance are determined, was introduced for the first time in 1987. Since then it has been repeated every three years.

In 2012, the competition was renamed "Building and renovating in historical surroundings" and expanded to include buildings from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s that are particularly worth preserving, and to energy-efficient renovations in ensemble areas and in the vicinity of architectural monuments.

Procedure

The competition is announced at the beginning of each year. The building owner and architect of a building project must register together to participate in the competition. The following construction measures can be registered:

  • New buildings in ensemble areas and in the vicinity of architectural monuments, essential additions and extensions to architectural monuments, conversions and conversions of architectural monuments
  • Additions and extensions, conversions and conversions of buildings from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s that are particularly worth preserving.
  • Exemplary energetic renovations in ensemble areas and in the vicinity of monuments

The construction work must have been completed in the last six years and must not have taken part in a previous competition. For the application, the construction project must be briefly described on a DIN A 0 cardboard in landscape format. This includes:

  • Stating the street and house number, names and addresses of the client and the architect, completion date of the building
  • Site plan of the property on a scale of 1: 1000, possibly with identification of the monuments or ensembles in the vicinity
  • Floor plans, views, sections on a scale of 1: 200 necessary for assessment, if necessary facade details on a scale of 1:10.
  • At least five photos in the format 13 × 18 cm, which on the one hand show the architecture of the property itself and on the other hand the connection with the listed area
  • An explanatory report with a description of the design and technical problem and its solution, in the case of energetic renovations with a description of the measures taken and the savings effect achieved

The applications are first examined by a voluntary committee of experts, which also conducts site visits. This commission proposes to the Munich City Council the contributions that should receive a prize or an honorable mention. The final decision is made by the Urban Planning and Building Regulations Committee of the Munich City Council.

Award winners

In each competition, i.e. every three years, up to three prizes of 2,600 euros each are awarded. The client and the architect receive the award jointly and in equal parts. Additional contributions that stand out in particular can receive an "Honorable Mention".
