A price mast or price tower is a display board on which the current sales prices of the fuel types offered are displayed at petrol stations .

According to Section 8 (1) of the Price Indication Ordinance , petrol station operators are obliged to mark fuel prices in such a way that they are clearly legible . This is only sufficiently possible with price masts.

electronic price mast

Until the 1990s, manual price masts were common, where the petrol station operator had to change the price numbers himself if the price changed. Today's electronic price towers differ in terms of scrolling , segment and LED displays. Price changes are transmitted via remote data transmission (EDI) from the headquarters of the mineral oil companies to the respective cash register system of the petrol station and from there, after the data has been transferred to the accounting system of the cash registers, electronically transferred to the price mast. It is therefore possible to adjust the price of fuels regularly, which is published transparently at any time via the market transparency office for fuels .

In border areas, prices are sometimes given in two or more currencies, for example in Switzerland. There is often an alternating display (alternating between CHF and EUR every two seconds).
