Presque Isle Light
The Presque Isle Light is one of three lighthouses in the city of Erie, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1872 on the Presque Isle Peninsula protruding into Lake Erie .
history
Construction of the lighthouse began in 1872. A brick tower was built on a limestone foundation on a square floor plan. Originally it was 12 meters high. In 1896 it was raised to its current height of 19 meters. Commissioning took place on July 12, 1873.
Its characteristic identifier of two red flashes followed by four white ones was changed to an alternating red and white fire with the electrification of the tower in the 1920s. In 1962 the lighthouse was fully automated and a clock with three-second light intervals was installed as an identifier.
On August 4, 1983, the lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places .
