The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a research facility of the US Department of Energy . The laboratory is located in Plainsboro Township in the state of New Jersey and is dedicated to research into plasma physics and the development of nuclear fusion as an energy source. It comprises 30 buildings on an area of approx. 0.367 km².

The laboratory employed a total of 500 full-time staff and 40 students in 2016. In addition, around 350 visiting scientists traveled to the laboratory. The total budget for 2016 was $ 92.92 million.

Until 1997 it operated the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR).

In 1999 the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) went into operation. The 10-week operation in 2016 after the 4-year upgrade to the NSTX-U ended with a destructive quench of a magnet. This and five similar, unsuitable magnets are to be replaced in the next few years (as of 2020).
