Coordinates: 80 ° 9 ′ N , 22 ° 56 ′ E
Prins-Oscars-Land is a peninsula in the north of the Spitsbergen island Nordostland .
geography
Prins Oscars Land lies between the Rijpfjord in the west and the Duvefjord in the east. In the south, Prins-Oscars-Land is essentially bordered by the Austfonna . To the west lies Gustav-V-Land , southwest Gustav-Adolf-Land , southeast Harald-V-Land and northeast Orvin-Land . The northernmost point of Prins-Oscars-Lands, Cape Platen on the Platenhalvøya peninsula, is also the North Cape of Northeast Land. In Prins-Oscars-Land itself there are only small glaciers, but it is surrounded by very large glaciers and in winter the land is enclosed by ice masses (and of course snow-covered).
etymology
Prins-Oscars-Land was named in honor of Prince Oskar, who later became King Oskar II of Sweden and Norway.
history
The area was the scene of the Haudegen company towards the end of the Second World War . In September 1944, the German Navy of the Wehrmacht set up a weather station on the east side of Wordiebukta , which was only disbanded by Norwegians on September 4, 1945.
