The Prinzessinentorte (also "Schwedentorte", Swedish. Prinsesstårta ) is a Swedish dessert specialty. The cake consists of a light, light cake, vanilla cream, berry jam and cream, which are piled on top of each other. The layer structure is covered with a lot of cream and wrapped in a light green marzipan coat. The princess cake is usually shaped into a hemisphere and is decorated with powdered sugar and marzipan roses. In Sweden, it is mainly served on the occasion of birthdays and school graduation.

history

The princess cake was created in the 1930s by the Swedish cookbook author Jenny Åkerström as one of three different cakes for the then princesses Margaretha, Märtha and Astrid . Since they liked and tasted this cake best, it was named accordingly.

variation

If the marzipan coat is not light green but pink, the cake is called Operatårta (German: "Operntorte"), but not to be confused with the French opera cake .
