Principles for digital development cooperation
The Principles for Digital Development Cooperation (also: Principles for Digital Development) are nine guidelines that are intended to help use digital technologies in development cooperation projects more efficiently, effectively and sustainably. The international principles were developed in 2014 and are based on earlier approaches such as UNICEF's innovation principles . Based on empirical knowledge, the principles are intended to minimize essential risks when using digital technologies, as described in the technology assessment.
The nine principles are:
- Design with the user
- Understand the existing ecosystem
- Design for scale
- Pay attention to sustainability from the start (Build for sustainability)
- Be data driven
- Use open standards , open data , open source software and open innovation (use open standards, open data, open source, and open innovation)
- Reuse and improve things
- Observe data protection and (data) security (Address privacy and security)
- Be collaborative
Since 2017, there has been a community of practice on the principles , in which practitioners exchange ideas on how the guidelines can be used to better shape the use of digital technologies in development cooperation projects .
