St. Michael Ballinskelligs (also: Ballinskelligs Priory ) was a priory in County Kerry in Ireland , some ruins of which can still be seen today near the village of Ballinskelligs on the bay of the same name, which is named after the monastery .

history

The monastery was probably founded in the first half of the 11th century by monks who had previously lived on Skellig Michael . Around 1210, the monastery joined the Arrouaise Order , which lived according to the Augustinian rule, with the support of the Rattoo Monastery, also located in Kerry . In 1476 the value of the monastery was estimated at 50 marks . In 1555 the priory still belonged to the Arrouaise order, but in 1585 the monastery fell into the possession of John Blake.

( Giraldus Cambrensis is given here as evidence for the move of the monks from Skellig Michael to this monastery . Furthermore, the work also addresses the speculations of HJ Lawlor that this monastery could be the Ibracense monastery founded by Malachias .)
