The Prisoner of War Medal is a military award of the US forces that at the direction of Congress was introduced. On November 8, 1985, the law (10 USC § 1128) came into force through the ratification of President Ronald Reagan .
The award is given to American citizens who have once been in prisoner-of-war status. It is also awarded retrospectively in all cases after April 5, 1917, the day the United States entered World War I.
The design of the order comes from the US Army Institute of Heraldry and was designed by Jay C. Morris .
Well-known winners of the Prisoner of War Medal include John McCain , James Stockdale , Jessica Lynch , Joseph Kittinger and Michael J. Durant .
