Prithviraj III. Chauhan
Prithviraj III. Chauhan (* around 1165; † 1192 at Tarain; r. 1178–1192) was a Rajput king from the Chauhan family in Delhi and Ajmer . He was beaten, captured and executed by Muhammad von Ghur in 1192 near Tarain at the "Gate of Delhi" . The victory enabled the Muslims to permanently occupy northern India.
In 1191 he had put Muhammad of Ghur to flight with a confederation of Rajput princes, whereby his opponent was wounded. But in 1192 he came back surprisingly with a better mounted army and was victorious on the same battlefield. After the battle, Prithviraja's wife and courtiers were burned at the stake.
In this context, it is also worth mentioning Prithviraja's love for Princess Sanyogita, the daughter of Jaichandra von Kannauj . By robbing them, he started a war with the Gahadavalas around 1189 , which also weakened the forces of the Rajputs.
Prithviraj III. has received his own knight epic as a souvenir: “O sun of the Chauhans, no one has experienced so much fame and joy as you. Life is like an old garment, why shouldn't we throw it off? To die steadfastly is to live forever. "
