The White Handels GmbH was an Austrian trading company with headquarters in Linz and operated the three department stores Pro Kaufland in Linz , Tabor in Steyr and Welas Park in Wels .

Company history

It was originally founded by Gerhard Weiß together with Pfeiffer. In 1974 the first Pro Kaufland department store was opened in Linz-Urfahr, followed by Tabor in Steyr am Tabor in 1980 . In 2006 the Welas Park opened in Wels-Pernau.

Since there was no successor within the family, the department stores were gradually sold to the Rutter real estate group and converted into retail parks by the new operator (Welas Park reopening in spring 2019), the Tabor has been rebuilt since January 2019 and the Pro Kaufland has continued unchanged until now.

The company ran its own butcher's shop , bakery and confectionery in the department stores . In addition, some companies such as sporting goods retailers, pharmacies, tobacconists, shoe shops etc. were rented.

In addition to groceries, the department stores also carried drugstores, household items, fashion, textiles, perfumery, stationery and toys. In addition, each of the three locations had a self-service restaurant.

After the redesign by Rutter, anchor tenants for a grocery store and another 23 business premises were let at Welas Rewe. In the future, Pro Kaufland is considering a mixed use, including additional living space on the upper floors.

The department stores in Linz and Steyr are among the leading in these cities.

The annual turnover was around 120 million euros (as of 2008).

Pioneering work by Gerhard Weiß

Gerhard Weiß offered pioneering services for consumers: Weiß was the first to do away with "while stocks last" in 1983. If a promotional product is no longer available, the customer receives a credit note. Weiß was also the only one who gave a year-round best price guarantee for food, laundry, cleaning, toilet articles and pet food, and also the only one who was willing to give every customer an insight into the calculation of every article. Another unique feature are the consumer councils democratically elected in the houses for criticism, praise and suggestions. Weiß 'shopping centers were also the first to run weekly discount campaigns for entire product groups every week.
