Procerus is a genus from the family of ground beetles (Carabidae).
features
Procerus species are 40 to 70 millimeters in size. They differ from the closely related genus Carabus in their size, body volume and the not brush-like hairy front tarsi of the males. The top of the body is very wrinkled like a worm. In the males, the end links of the anterior tarsi are hatchet-shaped, in the females they are strongly triangular.
Systematics and distribution
Only one species, the giant ground beetle ( Procerus gigas ), reaches southern Central Europe. Other species occur in Greece and the Middle East.
