Proculphus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Proculphus was the second bishop of Cracow in the 10th century after Prohorius .

He was mentioned in a list of the bishops of Krakow in the annals of the Krakow cathedral chapter from 1267, and in a catalog from the mid-14th century, where his ordination is dated to 986. The term of office and the circumstances of his office are controversial.

According to Piotr Biliński, he officiated from 986 to 1014, i.e. at the time of the conquest of Krakow by the Piasts of Greater Poland . The overlap with the term of office of the Latin bishop Poppo from the year 1000 at the latest is explained by the Church Slavic background of the presumably Greek-born Proculphus.

According to Józef Widajewicz, both Prohorius and Proculphus were Greek collaborators of the Slav apostle Method of Salonika . According to this dating, the period of activity of Proculphus in Lesser Poland should be set from the Orthodox baptism of the Wislanes and their prince in the years 875 to 880. A baptismal font from this period has been archaeologically proven in Wiślica , another Wislan residence next to Kraków. His term of office would then fall in the beginning of the 10th century.
