Professional Boardsailors Association

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Professional Boardsailors Association ( PBA ) was a windsurfing association that hosted the Windsurf World Cup from 1988 to 1995 under the name PBA Worldtour . This is the pro - Regatta series of windsurfers, was determined in the PBA in several disciplines world champion and an Overall World Champion.

Before that, the Windsurf World Cup was organized by the World Boardsailing Association (WBA), a manufacturer's association.

In 1987, at the World Cup in Zandvoort , Holland, the drivers decided to set up their own organization. The number of competitions, conditions and prize money did not meet the expectations of the drivers, who had no say. Before 1988, there were only three to six World Cups a year.

The PBA was then founded at the next World Cup in Guadeloupe . Every organizer that could offer enough prize money could register its event as a World Cup. As a result, the number of competitions quickly increased to 40 events with up to $ 250,000 in prize money. The tasks and structure largely corresponded to those of the current successor organization Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA), which was founded in 1995. The PBA had to be liquidated due to over-indebtedness.

Windsurfing was one of the first sports whose professional association was organized by the athletes themselves.
