Promethei Planum is an extensive plateau ( planum ) on the planet Mars .
It is located near the south pole of Mars at about 76 degrees south and 105 degrees east. It is probably a former impact basin which, due to its proximity to the South Pole, is covered in places with ice depending on the Martian season.
In the northern part of the plateau is the approximately one hundred kilometers large and 800 m deep impact crater Liais, which is named after the French astronomer Emmanuel Liais (1826–1900).
Images taken by the Mars Express probe from September 22, 2005 show that parts of it are covered with an ice layer up to 3500 m thick.
