Propylaen is the title of a journal for fine arts published by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe from late 1798 to late 1800 . In terms of content, it was contested almost exclusively by Goethe himself and his friend, the painter and art historian Johann Heinrich Meyer . Friedrich Schiller , Wilhelm von Humboldt and Caroline von Humboldt were also employees .

The Propylaea was supposed to provide visual artists with theoretical guidance as well as promote the art interest of the public (and possible clients and buyers) and develop their taste. In the magazine, Goethe propagated the ancient ideal of art to which he was also committed in his poetry at the time. With his advocacy of classicism , he turned against the emerging romanticism .

After two years, the Propylaea stopped its publication due to a lack of subscribers . Goethe's attempt to influence the development of art in Germany in favor of classicism ultimately failed.
