Protos (Office)

Protos ( Greek πρώτος "first") is the name for the highest representative of the monastic republic of Athos . Its seat is in Karyes .

Office

The Protos is the chairman of the "Holy Administration" consisting of four other members ( Ιερά Επιστασία , Iera Epistasia ). This is the executive body of the "Holy Gathering " ( Ιερά Κοινότητα , Iera Koinotita ), the assembly of representatives of the 20 monasteries of the monastic republic.

The Protos takes part in the meetings of the Holy Synod in Constantinople as a representative of the monastic republic and has some competencies. He can appoint and recall abbots, in accordance with the Patriarchate of Constantinople. In the past he also had the authority to ordain priests.

history

A protos on Athos was first mentioned in 908. He has been based in Karyes since 911 at the latest. In 972 his function was listed in the Typikon for Athos by Emperor Johannes Tzimiskes .

In the Typikon of 1810 the function of the Protos, the four members of the "Holy Administration" and the "Holy Meeting" as the representation of the monasteries on Mount Athos was determined.
