The Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor ( PFBR ) is a fast breeder reactor under construction at the Madras nuclear power plant in south-east India . The first drafts date from the 1980s, construction began in 2004, and commissioning was originally planned for 2010. Multiple construction delays led to new announcements for the time of commissioning. As of March 6, 2020, the Indian Ministry of Atomic Energy is expecting it to be operational by the end of 2021.

The PFBR is a sodium-cooled, fast reactor with a projected electrical output of 500  MW . It will be the third commercial breeder reactor in the world after the BN- 600 and BN-800 reactors in Russia.

The PFBR will breed plutonium to produce MOX fuel elements for other Indian reactors.
