Proxyshare was a closed source file sharing program for Windows , which outsourced the files offered for exchange to the proxy server of the respective ISP of the user. This resulted in very high speeds.

functionality

Most Internet service providers make proxy servers available to their customers, which are supposed to bring about speed advantages when "surfing" by means of caching . Proxyshare uses this cache to store files specifically selected by the user. Other users can then theoretically load the files at maximum speed. If the file has not yet been completely transferred to the proxy, but has already been requested by a user, the user receives the parts that have already been uploaded from the proxy and the rest directly from the providing user. If users from different ISPs want to exchange files, these are exchanged between the proxy servers of the ISPs. However, this happens at a slow speed.

This web cache function can also be found in some eMule modules.

rating

A detailed discussion on the Gulli -Board casts doubt on the professionalism and motivation of the Proxyshare authors.

ProxyShare is a product of Globalnet Inc. and is claims not to contain any pop-ups, banners, spy or adware. The business model is therefore unclear. Licenses used are also not mentioned.

The problem is the separation of the actual program kernel ("Core") and the user interface ("GUI"). ProxyShare does not use a self-created interface, but an open source variant called "Sancho". However, the communication between the core and the surface seems to be very flawed.

Versions

Proxyshare has been abandoned several times, only to be resumed afterwards.

ProxyShare1 (2003)

The first version appeared in 2003, but was discontinued soon afterwards.

ProxyShare2 (2004)

The basis for version 2 was the experience from the project for version 1. However, since only the old - unusable - code was further developed, the second attempt had to be stopped.

ProxyShare3 (2006)

In April 2006 version 3 was released, which according to the developer was rewritten. Since the official website has not been available since June 2nd, 2008, it can be assumed that ProxyShare3 has been discontinued.
