Psalm 121 (Valen)
Psalm 121 from 1911 is a composition for mixed choir , soloists and orchestra by Fartein Valen . The theme of the composition is Psalm 121 , the Old Testament of the Bible , verses 1-3 and 7-8. Musically the work is influenced by the German late romanticism .
Fartein Valen was a student at the Royal College of Music from 1909 to 1911 . After completing the psalm, Valen was satisfied with his composition and his friend Christian Sinding recommended that he publish it, which was not realized. When he was very busy with his artistic development at the time, he had no time for performances of completed works. Psalm 121 , which was not given an opus number by the composer, was first performed on May 31, 1984 at Festspillene i Bergen ( Bergen Music Festival ), at that time with the Bergen Cathedral Choir and the Orchestra of Musikselskabet Harmonie under the direction of the Norwegian conductor Karsten Andersen and Magnar Mangersnes (choir director).
