Definition

The term psychogerontology has two readings.

  • On the one hand, it is understood as a synonym for gerontopsychology (and thus a psychological and gerontological sub-discipline), but is only rarely used in this form.
  • On the other hand, it describes the Erlangen variant of an interdisciplinary research direction, which would actually better be called gerontology . The deviation from this is historically justified: "The term 'psychogerontology' arose from the separation between 'medical gerontology' (at the then Institute for Gerontology) and gerontopsychology (at the then Institute for Psychology II)."

The fact that within the University of Erlangen the term gerontology was already used by the "medical gerontologists" - actually geriatricians - led to the creation of an artificial word with reference to the specific origin of the discipline for Erlangen. The former medical institute for gerontology now bears the name "Institute for Biomedicine of Aging".

Psychogerontology as gerontology

Until the 2006/07 winter semester, the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg offered the postgraduate course in Psychogerontology since 1986, and since 1996 at the newly founded "Institute for Psychogerontology". The course included much more than just psychological content. In addition to subjects such as geriatric psychology and psychiatry, the curriculum also included offers from sociology, pedagogy, nutritional science, geriatrics, sports science, law and the like. a.

In the course of the Bologna process and the conversion of the old diploma courses, since the winter semester 2007/08 the master course “Gerontology” (M.Sc.) has also been at this institute. The historical name of the institute (“for psychogerontology”) has been retained.
