egy (Egyptian language)

The Ptolemaic Egyptian is a form of the Egyptian language , which in the last centuries BC, under the rule of the Ptolemies was used, sacred exclusively for writing texts. The grammar and lexicon are based on much older forms of Egyptian, especially Middle Egyptian , which was used as a spoken language as early as the middle of the 2nd millennium BC. Was extinct; Ptolemaic has little in common with the spoken language of that time, the demotic . Egyptian hieroglyphs were used for writing , the writing system of which in Ptolemaic texts has many peculiarities. In particular, the number of hieroglyphs used multiplied from around 700 in the Middle Kingdom to several thousand.

  1. The ISO and SIL codes refer to all ancient Egyptian languages, not just to Ptolemaic Egyptian.
