Ptolemy (Epirus)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ptolemy ( Greek  Πτολεμαῖος ) was a king of the Molossians and hegemon of the Epiroten from the Aiakid dynasty in the 3rd century BC.

Ptolemy was the younger son of King Alexandros II and his half-sister Olympias and a grandson of the famous Pyrrhus . His older brother and predecessor was Pyrrhos II. Soon after he came to power, at an unspecified point in time in the reign of his brother-in-law Demetrios II of Macedonia (239-229 BC), Ptolemy was probably during a campaign against his enemies the Aitolian League , in AmbrakiaAffected by an illness from which he died. According to a different report, he was assassinated. It is not unlikely that his death was related to the revolt of the Epiroten against the royal family. Ptolemy was the last male member of the Aiakid ruling house.
