history

On November 6, 1990, Jerry Greenberg and J. Stuart Moore founded Sapient. The founders had previously met at the Cambridge Technology Group consulting firm . They disregarded the practice common in the consulting business of billing projects according to expenditure, which often led to budget overruns. Projects were offered with a fixed implementation period and a predetermined budget (the so-called "Fixed-Time Fixed-Price Model") - at that time a new approach in the IT consulting industry. In the first few years, Sapient mainly developed client-server applications , which at that time increasingly replaced the mainframe architectures prevailing in large companies .

In 1994, New Jersey's state-owned energy company PSE & G commissioned Sapient to set up a radio network that would connect the supplier's truck fleet online with its databases. At the end of the project, the world's largest wireless data network at that time was created.

Also in 1994, Sapient entered the Internet business for the first time. Due to the massive spread of Internet technology, Sapient grew rapidly up to 2000 - the IPO followed in 1996. During this time, five more companies were acquired. One of the company's early internet engagements was programming the first internet banking tool that gave customers 24/7 access to their data.

The London office opened in 1997. The German branch was founded at the end of 2000 through a merger with the consulting company The Launch Group, which Christian Oversohl co-founded.

In 2005 and 2006, Sapient acquired the companies BIS (Business Intelligence Systems) and PGI (Planning Group International) in order to further expand its position in the areas of SAP consulting and interactive marketing. In 2009 the Nitro Group was bought and in 2011 the Cologne agency Clanmo was taken over. With the purchase of DAD, SapientNitro has expanded its range of direct marketing services. SapientNitro has also been represented in Latin America since 2013.

In 2015, the French advertising holding Publicis took over the international digital network Sapient for almost three billion euros. SapientNitro and Sapient Consulting were merged together with the sister agencies Razorfish and DigitasLBi under the new Publicis.Sapient umbrella.

In 2016, Publicis merged the two digital agencies Razorfish and SapientNitro to become SapientRazorfish.

Since 2019, the consulting company has only been active on the market as Publicis Sapient. SapientRazorfish and Sapient Consulting have been merged under the umbrella brand.
