The expression Pueblos jóvenes is the Spanish plural for young villages (singular Pueblo joven ). It is a term used in Peru for marginal settlements that arose from an invasion or illegal landings.

The Pueblos Jovenes were created by the large waves of migration from the surrounding rural areas or from all over the country. The latter is the case with the Peruvian capital Lima . Migration has increased sharply since it began around 1980 due to the activities of various terrorist groups (especially Sendero Luminoso and MRTA ).
