The Puente de Alcántara is the oldest of the bridges over the Tagus in the Spanish city of Toledo . It stands in the east of the city diagonally below the Alcázar .
The stone arch bridge has been the main access to the historic city center, which lies high above the Tagus, since Roman times, until it was supplemented by the Puente de San Martín on the western edge of the old town in the late Middle Ages .
The bridge, now reserved for pedestrians, is 83 m long and 5.40 m wide between its two gates and crosses the river at a height of about 26 m. It has a large round arch with a span of 28.30 m and - separated by an 8.40 m wide pillar - a smaller, 16 m wide arch over the slope leading up to the city. It is believed that there was a similar arch on the opposite slope, in the place of which a simple wall was built when the bridge was renewed in the 10th century. Only a small, 1.72 m wide passage with a horseshoe arch reminds of him. During the reign of Alfonso X , the bridge was destroyed and rebuilt. The western gate tower, which was provided with their coat of arms and other decorations under the Catholic Monarchs, dates from this time . A similar eastern tower was replaced by the current baroque archway in 1721 .
